Frequently Asked Questions

What is root canal treatment?

It is treatment that is carried out to relieve pain and help save a tooth that may have been damaged by decay, infection or fracture.

You would usually see the specialist for a consultation unless you have been referred by your dentist. Once you fully understand your options and costs we would arrange for treatment to be carried out. Local anaesthetic is used to make the treatment as pain free as possible and the root canal system in the tooth is cleaned out and filled so that you will no longer be in pain. The tooth may need a filling or some form of crown afterwards. This would be discussed prior to treatment starting.

If carried out correctly, root canal treatment does not need to be painful. Our specialist endodontists’ carry out only root canal treatment so are very experienced in ensuring the treatment is as pain free as possible.

It would be to extract the tooth altogether. We would advise to always save your natural teeth where possible. If you lose a tooth the gap should be replaced by a denture, implant or bridge to restore your chewing function and appearance.

Like most things in life, some people are better at some things than other people. A root canal specialist is a person who has carried out a further three years of training in root canal treatment as your general dentist. They then have to pass a rigorous examination before they are accepted onto the specialist register kept by the General Dental Council. Root canal specialists tend to have better success rates due to more expertise and better equipment used to treat patients. If you want to have the best possible outcome, the root canal specialist is the person to see. It is for this reason many general dentists refer patients to root canal specialists to have root canal treatment carried out.
